Why did Jesus curse the fig tree?

So Jesus wanted a fig but the fig tree had no figs on it. Jesus cursed it so that it would die. Why didn't he bless it and heal it so that it would bear figs once again? Is it the tree's fault that it wasn't getting the nutrients it needed to produce fruit for his poor wittle tummy? Or was the tree being rebellious to Jesus therefore he punished it?
