Which book made u compulsory reading(avoid harry potter&the da vinci code)?

I practially grew up in the library, my mom encouraged reading a lot. So I don't think that there was one book. However I've had the opposite problem... I now have a favorite book and whenever I try to read something else, I get bored with it beause to me nothing is as good.
